In cases of misconduct, severe corporal punishment or even execution was envisaged. In addition, the Taliban prohibit watching TV, using the Internet and playing musical instruments; it is also prohibited to listen to music and do visual arts.
The Allied invasion in 2001 was provoked by the Taliban's refusal to hand over Osama bin Laden, whom they were hiding after the 9/11 attacks.
Since 2003, the Taliban movement has been recognized as terrorist movement in Russia, and its activities in the country are strictly prohibited.
Eyewitnesses report that there is panic at the airport of Kabul - people are breaking through the barriers, trying to leave Afghanistan. The US military is trying to contain the crowd - warning shots in the air have been reported.
The Taliban said that the new Afghan government will include not only the Taliban, but also other citizens of the country.
