Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications blocked the American social network Facebook in Russia. The measure was a response to previously introduced restrictions on access to a number of Russian media, including RIA Novosti.
According to the department, Facebook carried out illegal blocking of access to the accounts of some Russian media. Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications announced the decision in its Telegram channel. According to the agency, since the fall of 2020, more than two dozen cases of discrimination against both Russian media and other information resources have been recorded.
Such actions are strictly prohibited by law, as contrary to the principles of free dissemination of information.
A week earlier, the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications took measures to slow down the work of Facebook, and its blocking became the second measure.
Earlier, the department also had questions to TikTok. They were related to the discrimination against official accounts of a number of media outlets, as well as public figures, RBC reports. On March 4, the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications sent an official letter to TikTok, which contained a demand to explain the reasons for the removal of a number of news stories published by RIA Novosti. The department also regards such actions as a violation of the principles of free dissemination of information established in Russia.
