SCOTLAND MADE PERIOD PRODUCTS FREE FOR ALL

The Parliament of Edinburgh unanimously approved a law to provide women with free access to hygiene period products.  Scotland became the first country in the world to provide such a right at the legislative level.

The Scottish authorities explain their decision by measures to combat poverty.  Parliamentary spokesman and author of the project Monica Lennon said that Scotland does not agree with the statement according to which the question "where to get tampons next time" is a problem of a particular woman, but not a problem of a state.

In accordance with the adopted draft law, the government will develop a system by which women will receive hygiene products.  It is assumed that this can be done in special places: pharmacies, cultural centers, etc.

Free hygiene products will appear in the toilets of schools and universities.

The innovation will cost the Scottish budget $ 32 million (2.4 billion rubles).  Now the local authorities will start implementing the idea so that the tampons and pads could be received by everyone who needs them.

Monica Lennon added that the project is especially relevant during the coronavirus, when many people are experiencing financial problems.  Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon also commented on the innovation, calling it an extremely important support measure for women.  On her Twitter, she writes that she is proud of Scotland, which has managed to become the first country in the world to provide women with this opportunity.
