The Portuguese parliament has passed amendments to the labor code regarding remote work.  Now, the bosses can receive a fine for messages and calls to employees outside of working hours.

According to Euronews, the innovation will allow Portuguese employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance.  The decision to take such measures was made after the mass transition of people to remote work.
There are penalties for contacting employees outside of working hours.
However, the new law will not be applied to companies with less than 10 employees.  The Portuguese authorities also obliged employers to pay employees’ bills for the Internet and electricity - these expenses will be included in ‘business expenses’.

Another innovation has been introduced for parents of children under 8 years old - they are allowed to work from home without asking permission from their superiors.  The clause of the law on the ‘fight against loneliness’ is also interesting.  This means that personal meetings of employees should take place at least once every 2 months.
Employers were banned from monitoring employees while they work from home.
The deputies also proposed to legitimize the ‘right to disconnect’ - the disconnection of all working chats and devices immediately after the end of the working day.  However, this initiative was rejected.

Portugal became the first country in Europe to legalize new rules for remote working citizens.  Earlier, the country's authorities obliged employers to provide employees with all the devices necessary for remote work.
