The Moscow catering market has experienced a serious blow in 2020 - this is the conclusion made by the specialists of the research department of the international consulting agency JLL. A comparative analysis of data on the closures of cafes and restaurants in the capital for 2019 and 2020 revealed that the figure increased by 35%.
According to RBC, the central catering establishments of Moscow faced the most acute problem of liquidation. At the same time, according to Vladislav Fadeev, head of the analytical department of JLL, the main factors of losses incurred by the public catering market were uncertainty and lack of understanding, which left entrepreneurs no chance to prepare for the new situation.
The share of restaurants and cafes was 46% out of 455 organizations that closed in the capital in 2020.
Among the most famous public catering establishments that were forced to terminate their activities in the previous year JLL’s experts name establishments operating under the brands of Shokoladnitsa, Prime and Chaikhona ¹ 1. Many companies vacated their leased premises, which inevitably led to lower prices for commercial real estate lease in the center of Moscow.
According to experts, the number of openings in the street retail market was also a quarter less than a year earlier. 294 companies were opened, and the amount of vacant space increased to 15.5%. The closer cafes and restaurants were to the city center, the greater risk of losses they were exposed to as a result of anti-epidemic measures introduced by the capital's authorities.
Not only the events themselves, but also the indirect factors caused by the spread of infection had a significant impact on the street trade market.
The tourist flow decreased several times, and the fear of infection and the transfer of employees to remote work led to a significant decrease in traffic. The establishments that were located closer to the outskirts were much more fortunate, say the research company analysts.
We should recall that organizations providing catering services stopped working from the end of March to almost mid-June 2020, and subsequently the Moscow authorities established a procedure prohibiting catering to operate from 23-00 to 6-00. The restrictions, originally set for the period from November 13 to January 15, were later extended to January 21.
