Menstruation can become the ground for a sick leave in Spain
Menstruation can become the ground for a sick leave in Spain
The Spanish authorities are considering giving the right to sick leave to women who experience painful menstruation. At the moment, the relevant bill is being developed.
The document provides for the right of a woman to go on sick leave for a period of three days if she has a medical certificate of painful menstruation.
It will be possible to issue it throughout the year, as well as to extend it for medical reasons.
The country's government may come to a decision to approve the initiative, the ACB newspaper reports. The bill will be considered at the state level next week.
To obtain the appropriate sick leave, a woman needs to obtain a medical certificate stating that she has painful menstruation. It is assumed that the document will be valid throughout the year and will make it possible not to visit the workplace if the general condition worsens due to menstruation. In addition, the three-day period may be extended to five days if such a need is supported by a doctor's opinion.
If the bill is passed, Spain will become the first EU country to legalize the right of a woman not to attend the workplace for such reasons.
