Drug sales through DarkNet are growing in Russia
The economic problems faced by businesses against the backdrop of the pandemic in fact have not affected the illegal market for the sale of psychotropic substances and drugs. Moreover, the market itself is becoming technological, and sales are carried out online through the DarkNet, the shadow part of cyberspace.

At the same time, electronic platforms selling illegal drugs do not lag behind from the legal marketplaces like AliExpress or Wildberries in their equipment.

In the context of a general decline in income among a significant part of the Russian population, the trade in psychotropic drugs is becoming especially attractive among people hoping to quickly enrich themselves in this way, despite obvious conflicts with the law enforcement system and moral norms. The threat of criminal punishment provided for in the Article 228 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, apparently, does not bother the participants in the criminal business.

At the same time, the websites themselves, data on the number of outlets, the cost of prohibited substances and the location of the pick-up points are available for monitoring.

Rusbankrot got acquainted with the results of one of such studies carried out by Maxim Gorbunov, an analyst from the Max agency of marketing strategies in Novosibirsk city. It processed data from one of the most popular websites of the DarkNet as of July 31, 2021.
Moscow and St. Petersburg are the leading cities in the terms of drug trafficking in Russia.
The cost of ‘goods’ put up for sale amounted to 308.3 million rubles and 132.4 million rubles per day, respectively. Drugs are placed in several types of storage locations (kind of ‘pick-up points’) with the use of drop-points, magnets or coveted with soil. They can be niches in residential buildings, metal implements or open areas. At the time of the study, there were 21,260 such places in Moscow, and 11,386 in St. Petersburg. The total weight of narcotics in Moscow was more than 586 kg, and in St. Petersburg - 321 kg.

‘The data obtained’, said Maxim Gorbunov in his interview with Rusbankrot, ‘testify to the ongoing expansion of drug trafficking in the country's regions. For example, if in the spring of 2020, there were 110 drug outlets in Novosibirsk, then at the end of July 2021, we already see 303 outlets’.

The volume of the ‘stashes of drugs’ in Novosibirsk amounted to 86,823.11 kg for a total of 52,918,558 rubles.
A dangerous trend in the distribution of drugs, according to the expert, has become an increase in their availability in cities with a high concentration of the population.
Previously, addicted consumers had to travel to storage sites using geolocation and taxi services. Now more and more ‘treasures’ are placed by prior order in the vicinity of the customer.

These sales are not tracked through the web monitoring process. The so-called ‘master treasures’ used to move larger consignments of drugs that are used by owners for internal logistics and traffic to the regions of the country have not been included in the results of the analysis as well. According to rough estimates, the number of couriers involved in the distribution of narcotic substances in Russia is estimated at 14 thousand people.

According to experts, the digitalization of the drug business in Russia leads to a change in the assortment matrix. The ‘traditional’ drugs (imported into the country mainly from abroad) are being replaced by drugs that are produced for criminal purposes within the country. Such large cities as Kazan and Yekaterinburg are under attack. Considering the fact that the number of websites in the DarkNet is becoming larger and larger, the structure of drug use and the methods of drug trafficking are also changing.

Note: Rusbankrot is against the use of drugs for non-medical purposes. With this publication, we hope to draw public attention to the problem and show its real scale.
