A new Covid-19 side effect was reported by doctors of the British Royal Hospital in Derby. The disease is described as "cortical blindness".
As an example, the researchers described the case of a 54-year-old British woman who had no chronic diseases before she got infected with Covid-19. When she came to visit the doctor, the woman had a temperature of 38.4, muscle pain, fever, pulse 114 beats per minute, dry cough, pressure 125/78, and the oxygen level in the blood dropped to 82.
Soon the woman felt worse - she was transferred to a ventilator and antibiotics were prescribed to her, which had a positive result.
After 3 weeks of treatment, the woman had a stroke described as "tonic-clonic" onr, after which she underwent a CT scan of the brain. According to the results of the examination, the British woman was diagnosed with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, and cortical blindness was revealed within ten days. This disease begins against the background of damage to the occipital part of the brain and causes a complete blindness.
The woman was actively treated, and over the next eight weeks, the vision partially returned to her. The British began to distinguish between shapes and colors, but there is still no talk of a complete recovery, since the damage turned out to be serious.
Experts note that the cause of the development of cortical blindness was not high blood pressure, but sepsis against the background of covid.
