‘Anonymous’ hackers attack leading Russian media websites
On February 28, the websites of many Russian media were blocked by the ‘Anonymous’ hacker group. Through social media, hackers made a statement that a ‘cyber war’ was declared on Russia in response to a military operation launched on the territory of Ukraine.
Among the victims of the hacker attack there were Izvestia, Kommersant, Forbes, TASS and other media outlets.
On the main pages of websites, the ‘Anonymous’ group managed to call on visitors to stop hostilities. Corresponding messages began to appear around 14-00 hours Moscow time. Many users have complained that websites have stopped working on digital devices at all.
TASS representatives reported a DDoS attack through their telegram channel. The agency noted that the editorial office of the information service did not post information, and the website was hacked by intruders. Similar information was reported by Forbes, citing the prompt connection of technical services working on the problem.
The group announced plans to conduct a cyber attack on the websites of the Russian state structures a few days ago.
After that, broadcasting on the website of the RT channel was temporarily stopped. What is more, many government departments report a mass DDoS attacks. Users are warned that problems may occur with access to the Kremlin website, public services.
The ‘Anonymous’ movement has been widely known since 2008. The so-called ‘hacktivism’, carried out on a global scale, has led to a number of protests against restrictions in the field of digital communications. The group has been actively involved in the movement against anti-piracy initiatives, opposing copyright campaigns by film studios and business corporations.
The current ‘cyber war’ declared by the Internet group actually means that hacker attacks on the Internet resources of the Russian government and the media will continue. Experts note that the websites of the government and credit organizations were attacked by ‘Anonymous’ even before the start of Russia's active operations in Ukraine.
