A new strain of coronavirus called Omicron, which has been discovered not so long ago, has already reached Russia.  According to the Russian Federal State Agency for Health and Consumer Rights, cases of infection were recorded in different regions of the country, including both capitals and their regions, as well as in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Perm Territory, Rostov, Orenburg, Murmansk and Oryol regions.

According to the head of the department Anna Popova, under an unfavorable set of circumstances, the number of new infections can reach 100 thousand daily. At the moment, experts note the deterioration of the epidemiological situation in different regions of Russia, RIA Novosti reports.

Speaking about the features of the new strain, the head of the Russian Federal State Agency for Health and Consumer Rights noted a shorter incubation period - an infected person can infect others on the second day, while the immediate symptoms of the disease will appear on the third or fifth day.

At the same time, many experts talk about a milder course of the disease when infected with a new strain. According to the French Minister of Health, the delta strain brings patients to intensive care, and the omicron - to hospital beds.

The largest university hospital AH-HP has published preliminary comparative data on the incidence of delta and omicron strains. More than 3,000 patients were evaluated, and the study concluded that there was a decrease in the number of people admitted to intensive care together with an increase in the number of patients in hospital beds.

It means that the disease of those infected with the new strain of coronavirus shows a milder course compared to its predecessor, the delta strain.

It is worth noting that 1.13 million new cases of the disease were detected in the United States on January 10, which is an absolute world record. For comparison, 17.5 thousand new patients were recorded in the Russian Federation over the past day - almost 65 times less.
