Two dozen owners of Apple brand devices applied to the Presnensky District Court of the capital to Apple Rus, which represents the interests of an American company in Russia.  In a class-action lawsuit, consumers demand payment of moral damages (10 thousand each) in connection with the termination of work of ApplePay application on their mobile devices.  The case was initiated by the “Public Consumer Initiative”.

According to Kommersant, referring to data from the DestraLegal.ru website, the plaintiffs point to the company's violation of consumer protection laws.  They require a reduction in the cost of devices they purchased during the period when the application was functioning properly.

Whether the district court will made a decision to punish the company by "proportionately reducing" the cost of the devices is not clear yet.  Experts disagree on how the issue will be resolved.  But the decision of the court may become a kind of precedent for further disputes of this kind.
The application stopped working after VISA and Mastercard payment systems had left the Russian market.
Given this fact, the court may dismiss the claim, since the application is serviceable.  Moreover, the ApplePay service does not function in some other countries of the world (India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa).

On the other hand, the court may take the side of the Russians.  The company also removed Russian payment system Mir, added to ApplePay in July 2021, from the application.  Buyers of devices who managed to link bank cards to a mobile device used this opportunity for less than one year.

At the moment, the lawsuit against the subsidiary of Apple in Russia does not look too large.  The price of a claim of 200,000 rubles (about $2,750 at the official exchange rate of the Central Bank on the day the application was filed) is relatively low.  However, the number of applicants may increase, and in the case of a positive decision, the court may oblige the company to also compensate for the cost of the gadgets themselves.

The initiator of the lawsuit demands to stop the sale of Apple brand devices in Russia, freeze accounts and compensate for the damage to all the users.  In this case, the amount of compensation can reach billions of rubles.
