Rules of the Russian language will be updated first time in 65 years
The project was developed by the Ministry of Education - it contains updated spelling and punctuation rules that meet the modern requirements of the Russian language.

The document was published on the federal portal of regulatory legal acts.  Previously, amendments to the norms of the Russian language were introduced in 1956, but now it is reported that changes are necessary due to the update of the language.  The Ministry of Civil Engineering stressed out that this was necessary due to the appearance of borrowed foreign words, as well as the temporary changes.
The ministry called the process natural, since no changes have been made for more than 60 years.
New rules will appear in the Russian language, for example, the rules explaining the spelling of vowels after sibilants and the letter ‘ö’. They will also explain the correct spelling of unstressed vowels, hard and soft signs.  The rules will be supplemented by the conditions for writing the letter ‘ý’ in foreign words (racketeering, rap, etc.).

In addition, the new rules will clarify the spelling of the letter ‘é’, talk about the use of unpronounceable and double consonants, and clarify the hyphenated spelling of compound words (Elijah the Prophet, Nikolai the Wonderworker).
Education Minister Sergei Kravtsov notes that the project is being discussed.
Based on the results, the department will find out the position of experts for the qualitative improvement of the Russian language.  It is noted that the current exceptions of the language will remain in force, as the innovations will affect the acquired words that have appeared relatively recently.

The fact is that in the last few years alone, about 3,500 new words and expressions have appeared in the Russian language.  Many innovations entered the language with the beginning of the pandemic (‘anti-axers’, ‘remote’). The updated rules of the Russian language are planned to be finalized and adopted by the end of 2021.
