THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
22 November 1970 The city of Naberezhnye Chelny was renamed Brezhnev. The first name was returned to the city in 1988.1970 The US President John F. Kennedy was killed.1970 Abortions were allowed in the USSR in case pregnancy threatened the mother's life.
The State Duma’s vice speaker and representative of the Fair Russia party, Olga Epifanova, brought forward the initiative, according to which July 1 should be made a day-off in memory of the adoption of amendments to the Constitution.
As a justification for her position, Epifanova reminded the parliamentarians that until 2005, the Constitution Day was celebrated on December 12 and was a public holiday. She informed RIA Novosti about this.
Now Epifanova offers to revive the tradition, so that this day could be remembered by everyone.
We should recall that the vote on constitutional amendments was held from June 25 to July 1. As a result, almost 78% of voters voted “for”. The only region that opposed the amendments was the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The voter turnout was estimated at almost 68% - the Kremlin called the results a triumph.
It is necessary to note that now the Constitution Day is still celebrated on December 12, but it is not a day - off.
