LDPR deputies proposed to return the death penalty in Russia
Deputies of the LDPR party came up with an initiative to reintroduce the death penalty in the country.  This is due to the withdrawal of Russia from the Council of Europe after the introduction of a number of sanctions.  It is proposed to apply punishment for corruption crimes, terrorism, as well as sophisticated murders and rapes of children.

The parliamentarians noted that the decision to return the death penalty could be taken at a referendum in which the Russians would take part.

The LDPR believes that with Russia's withdrawal from the Council of Europe, the country is throwing off the "shackles of alien values."

The deputies recalled that the death penalty continues to be applied in almost fifty countries, including some US states, Japan, India, Egypt and China.

Despite this, the LDPR believes that the issue of the return of the death penalty is not unambiguous and requires a popular vote. A relevant poll has already been organized on the party’s Telegram channel, in which 1,500 people took part, and more than half of them voted for the return of the death penalty.

Capital punishment ceased to be applied in Russia in 1997 after the signing of Protocol No. 6 to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. Despite this, provisions remained in national law on the possibility of applying such a sanction to those who committed a crime, but this was not used by the courts. They were hindered by the supremacy of the norms of international law over domestic law established in Russia.
