THE TRIPLE BLOW TO ROBERT DE NIRO: THE ACTOR IS ABOUT TO GO BANKRUPT
THE TRIPLE BLOW TO ROBERT DE NIRO: THE ACTOR IS ABOUT TO GO BANKRUPT
The winner of two Oscar awards, American film actor Robert de Niro cannot boast of the successful roles in the movies recently. He has already been nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award more than once and has been criticized for his participation in the “Dirty Grandpa” film.
However, in recent months, the actor has lost millions of dollars. The reason was the COVID-19 pandemic, which dealt a triple blow to the actor.
Firstly, the Nobu restaurant chain and the luxurious Greenwich Hotel, from which De Niro made significant profits, were closed.
The experts note that Nobu chain has lost about $ 3 million in April, and then another $ 1.87 million in May. At the same time, De Niro still has to pay investors about $ 0.5 million in cash. Once the actor has managed to promote his business to the significant heights, but in the era of a pandemic, public capital, apparently, is poorly converted into real money.
Secondly, the pandemic hit the entertainment industry hard. The film industry has been hit as well. Closed cinemas ceased to be profitable, influencing the production of new films. The process of filming of the “Oklahoma”movie, in which De Niro planned to participate, was frustrated due to the need for the compliance with the quarantine measures. However, the contract has already been signed, which means that the actor is likely to get about $ 2.5 million in 2020 and 2021.
The "main blow" to the financial condition of De Niro was a divorce from his wife in 2018.
According to the agreement, the actor regularly paid alimony. The reason for the dissolution of the marriage, as many believed, was precisely the squandering of Gray Hightower, with whom the actor had been married for 20 years. The scene that was made by the couple in 2017 was widely discussed in the media. Then the actor accused his wife of the fact that due to her ineffective spending in the coffee business (it was a chain of coffee houses Grace Hightower & Coffees of Rwanda), he had to act in films of the second grade in order to make a living.
Now it turned out that the ex-wife filed a lawsuit against the 76-year-old De Niro, demanding to increase the monthly limit of her credit card to $ 100 thousand.
Previously, the actor paid alimony in the annual amount of $ 1 million, but recently, he has been forced to lower the amount of payments. Now Grace receives no more than $ 50,000 per month. The ex-spouse's lawyers had to prove in court that the actor was barely making ends meet. The previous income of at least $ 15 million a year, from which De Niro paid alimony, has become unattainable due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.
The trial itself took place on Skype. The actor tried to explain why he cut the allowance of his ex-wife. However, the arguments of De Niro, apparently, did not really convince the Judge Matthew Cooper, who was considering the case.
The court was not convinced that the actor, whose fortune is estimated at $ 500 million, was so impoverished that he did not manage to keep his former spouse in the same volume.
As a result, the judge issued a provisional order, which was called the Solomon decision by many. Now the actor is obliged to maintain the ex-spouse's credit card limit of $ 75 thousand per month.
