The Russian Buyk service in the USA went bankrupt, leaving 900 employees out of work.
Launched by the Russians in September 2021 in New York, the fast food delivery service declared bankruptcy, firing all employees. The reason for the fiasco was the actions of Russia and the United States caused by the beginning of a special operation on the territory of Ukraine.
US sanctions against the Russian financial system (in particular, Sberbank) have made it impossible to finance the company's activities. Subsequent restrictions on banking operations by the Kremlin, imposed by the president on February 28, led to the final collapse. The Russian founders of the service were not included in the sanctions lists, but on March 17, the company appealed to the court, referring to Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code.
Buyk was the "daughter" of the Russian Scooter service founded by Vyacheslav Bocharov and Rodion Shishkov.
According to The Washington Post, back in late February, the head of Buyk during a chat in ZOOM convinced employees that the company would not suffer, although its parent company is located in Russia, and the co-founders are Russians. However, less than 20 days have passed, and all employees have been dismissed. This happened on March 11, 2022.
It is reported that another startup in the USA, Refrigerator No More, also failed. He was also engaged in food delivery and was a direct competitor to Buyk. The company ceased operations on March 10, leaving about 600 employees out of work.
According to the head of the retail department Yusuf Alabi-Ajidagba, for a courier with an income of $17 per hour, legal issues about whose sanctions bankrupted the company do not matter much. The employees did not expect to lose their source of income.
According to experts, American Buyk was a very successful company that was at the beginning of its expansion.
The firm managed to attract $46 million of investments from leading venture capital companies with connections in the Russian Federation. The startup, which opened its first office in New York, promptly recruited staff and opened a branch in Chicago in 2022. The organization's plans were to create thousands of jobs.
