Russian pharmaceutical market has lost 3% of pharmacies
Russian pharmaceutical market has lost 3% of pharmacies
About 2 thousand Russian pharmacies ceased to exist between June and September 2021. At the same time, the negative trend affected, first of all, representatives of small and medium-sized businesses. About 44% of all closed pharmacies are single enterprises. But the chains, operating in several regions of Russia at once, managed to expand their market presence by 6% (up to 8668 outlets) by autumn.
Corresponding data are given by ‘Izvestia’ and based on the results of the work of the DSM Group research company. The analysis of the pharmaceutical market showed that by the end of September, the number of operating pharmacies in Russia decreased by 3%, having amounted to 64,353 outlets.
A significant share of the pharmacies that have closed their doors to customers is accounted for by the regional business (about 27%).
About 15% of the liquidated pharmacies operated on the local market. And only 12% of the retail outlets that closed in just a few months were establishments of federal chains.
According to experts, several market trends could have influenced the reduction in the number of pharmacies. First of all, the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictive measures introduced by the state became a negative factor for the majority of them. The transition of many workers to ‘remote work’ and the use of PPE (in particular, wearing masks) has led to a reduction in ARVI patients and people suffering from chronic diseases. The demand for pharmaceuticals has declined.
Another important factor for the pharmaceutical market, according to analysts, is the development of the e-commerce market.
Despite the liquidation of offline outlets, the number of firms that have received licenses to work with drugs in the field of e-commerce has only increased.
In the fall of 2021, their number increased to 390 organizations, which indicates an increase of 42% compared to January. If we consider the growth dynamics for the period from June to September, then the number of participants in online drug trade increased more than 3 times (338%).
Public policy measures also played a significant role in reducing the number of pharmacy outlets in the country. In particular, for many market participants, the abolition of UTII, and the adopted requirements for special labeling of medical products have become such negative factors.
