The head of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, said that the production of the legendary Moskvich cars would be launched again at the Renault plant located in Moscow. The plant itself would be transferred to the balance of the city.
Sobyanin announced the decision in his blog. The mayor of the capital noted that the owner of the Renault plant made a decision to close it, but the authorities could not allow the dismissal of the many thousands of labor collectives. For this reason, the enterprise was taken to the balance of Moscow in order to produce Moskvich cars on it.
KAMAZ will become the technological partner of the plant.
Sobyanin stressed out that at first the plant would produce classic cars with internal combustion engines. But in the future there would be electric cars. Work to localize the production of automotive components in the Russian Federation is also underway.
The plant, located on Volgogradsky Prospekt, has been producing Moskvich cars for many years. In 2010, “Moskvich” OJSC was liquidated due to bankruptcy, but back in 1998 it was bought by “Renault Russia” and began producing French cars.
