Ukraine's gas supply worries not only to the current leaders of the Naftogaz company. An expert assessment of the state of affairs in the industry was given by the ex-head of the organization Andrey Kobolev. In his opinion, the new management of the company turned out to be incompetent, which forced him to systematically solicit funds for the purchase of fuel from the state budget.
In an interview with Forbes, the former head of Naftogaz called the actions of the new leadership a ‘catastrophic mistake’. By refusing to purchase gas in advance before the heating season, top management actually led the company to bankruptcy.
According to the expert, the Ukrainian company will simply not be able to independently restore the necessary gas reserves in the next heating season. According to approximate calculations, about 8 billion cubic meters of gas will have to be imported.
If by that time the price for it is between $500 and $600, the company will not be able to pay for the delivery.
At the end of 2021, a message from the current head of Naftogaz was published in the Ukrainian media. In it, Yuriy Vitrenko stated that there was enough fuel in the country's storage facilities and that Ukraine would endure the winter heating season without any problems. At the same time, he also recommended that residents treat their consumption sparingly, citing the high cost and global shortage of fuel.
Kobolev noted in an interview that the current policy of the company already contradicts the December words of Vitrenko. Naftogaz is actively purchasing Russian gas from Hungary, paying $1,440 for every 1,000 cubic meters. In other words, there is a shortage of gas. Whether Ukrainians will be able to make it through this winter will be determined by weather conditions. March may become the most risky month, according to the expert.
