Liquidation of international ‘Memorial’ postponed for another two weeks
Regular hearings in the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation in the case of the liquidation of the international historical and educational organization ‘Memorial’ (which is officially recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) were held on December 14. The proceedings took several hours, the court examined the documents and materials presented by the Prosecutor General's Office.

We should remind our readers that the Prosecutor General's Office sent a claim demanding the liquidation of an international organization in Russia to the highest court on November 8.  Another lawsuit related to the liquidation of the human rights center of the same name (the HRC also has the status of a foreign agent) is being considered in the Moscow City Court.

The Prosecutor General's Office points to several facts of violation of the law by an international organization: concealment of indications of activity as a foreign agent (violation of the rules on labeling publications), participation in political activities in the presence of funding from abroad (activity to form public opinion).
The Moscow Prosecutor's Office is trying to impute the justification of terrorism and extremism to the human rights center.
Hearings in this case will be held on December 16.

Representatives of ‘Memorial’, in response, point out that since 2019, the organization has regularly paid all fines charged by the authorities, the amount of which turned out to be more than 6 million rubles.  In addition, representatives of the defense drew the attention of Judge Alla Nazarova to the fact that the procedure for marking the organization's Internet resources with an indication of its ‘foreign agency’ status is not legally defined.

This time, the court examined 9 volumes, which combined materials on the ‘Memorial’ case, ranging from the lawsuit of the prosecutor general and ending with accounting statements about receiving money from abroad, publications of the organization's statements about its attitude to many high-profile events (such as the murder of Boris  Nemtsov and the conflict in eastern Ukraine).  The organization's lawyers managed to attach the electronic carrier with signatures of more than 127 thousand people under a petition in defense of ‘Memorial’ to the materials of case.
Hearings of argumets of the parties in the Supreme Court are scheduled for December 28.
The story with ‘Memorial’ has already provoked a reaction from many diplomats from around the world.  Nobel laureates Dmitry Muratov and Mikhail Gorbachev also spoke about the need to end the organization's prosecution.  The reaction of the presidential administration to the events remains unclear.  It is not known whether the trial will justify the hope for an impartial and objective investigation, expressed earlier by President Putin.
