Legendary Italian airline Alitalia operates its final flight
Coronavirus infection had literally ‘killed’ Alitalia airline company. It became known that on October 14, the flight from Cagliari to Rome will be the last in the 75-year history of the air carrier.  The reason for the liquidation of the aviation enterprise is bankruptcy.  From Friday, flights will be operated by another company (ITA, Italia Trasporto Aereo), in which some of Alitalia's employees will work.

Losses have plagued the company since 1999. The state authorities, apparently, are tired of allocating funds from the country's budget.  Experts calculated that in 2008-2020, the authorities invested about ˆ 10 billion in the airline.
The company filed for bankruptcy back in 2017.
After the authorities had unsuccessfully tried to attract an investor who would agree to buy the company, Alitalia went under external control.

October 2020 was marked by the decision that the company will be restructured.  As a result, the ITA company, which had received a license to operate, was created.  Tickets for its flights have recently become available for purchase.  ITA received 52 liners from the former carrier, including 7 long-haul liners.

What is more, 2,500 employees moved to a new place, some of which may still be laid off - in total, about 8,000 employees of Alitalia will lose their jobs.  The wage fund is planned to be cut by 40%.  The new company has announced big plans to open long-haul routes to Tokyo, São Paulo and New York, but so far there are not enough resources to do so.
COVID-19 pandemic is not the only reason for the bankruptcy and liquidation of Alitalia.
Analysts point out that high-speed trains played a significant role in this, as they turned out to be a more profitable and environmentally friendly mode of transport in the country's domestic market.  It is no coincidence that in 2021, there is an increase in the shares of the European low-cost airlines Ryanair and WizzAir.  At the same time, the securities of such business monsters as Lufthansa or IAG show negative dynamics.
