Farmers in Moldova have started a protest, fearing bankruptcy
The Association of Moldovan Agrarians "Farmer Force" initiated a protest demonstration. Last Tuesday, farmers held a warning action – they brought agricultural machinery to the roads of the republic. The reason for the action was the rise in prices for fuel and fertilizers, which put farms on the verge of ruin.
According to the chairman of the "Farmer's Force" Ion Plemedyale, the participants of the action do not plan to block the highways again, as it was done in 2020. At that time, despite the concessions that the farmers obtained from the authorities, it came to attempts to storm the Moldovan parliament.
Agrarians are trying to draw the attention of the government to the problems in the agriculture of the republic.
Therefore, the action is presented as a peaceful warning that farmers send to the authorities. Attempts to enter into a dialogue with the Prime Minister of Moldova, the head of the relevant ministry and people's deputies in parliament took place on Monday. And although the meeting with Natalia Gavrilitsa and Viorel Gerciu was successful, the farmers did not receive concrete results from it.
According to the participants of the action, Moldovan agricultural producers were a few steps away from bankruptcy. Fertilizer prices have quadrupled, and diesel fuel has tripled in price. According to expert estimates, this is not the limit.
Farmers demand from the government to lift previously established bans on exporting wheat.
Another option to save the situation may be the purchase of grain by the authorities as a state reserve. In addition, Moldova receives subsidies from the European Union and the IMF, which could be used as financial assistance to agriculture.
