Amber Heard is facing bankruptcy after a lawsuit with Johnny Depp.
Amber Heard is facing bankruptcy after a lawsuit with Johnny Depp.
The trial due to libel between the former spouses ended on June 1 in the court of the state of Virginia (USA). Amber Heard, who accused her husband of domestic violence, was caught cheating. Johnny Depp won a "media victory" by defending his reputation. And while videos with the Hollywood actor and comments in his support are gaining a record number of views on social networks, experts are paying attention to the financial condition of his ex-wife.
The verdict of the court, based on the decision of the Fairfax County jury, requires the actress to pay compensation in favor of the ex-spouse in the amount of $ 10 million. Amber Heard also has to spend on penalties – they could amount to $ 5 million, but in the state of Virginia, the law sets the maximum limit of the fine at $ 350 thousand. It was this amount that was awarded to Johnny Depp's ex-wife.
The financial condition of 36-year-old Amber Heard has not been disclosed.
It is known that in 2016, after her divorce from Johnny Depp, the actress received $ 7 million in compensation from her husband. And although she did not realize the promise to spend the amount received for charity, this amount is clearly not enough for payments.
In an interview on a television show, this information was confirmed by lawyer Elaine Charlson Bredehoft. It is known from open sources that Hurd owns a country house (according to rough estimates, it costs $ 570 thousand) and a Range Rover car.
According to experts, the actress now has three possible behaviors. Lawyers have already stated that Hurd plans to appeal the court's decision. But to do this, she may have to post a $10.35 million bail. It will be difficult to do this in the current situation, given the blow to the reputation of the actress and the circumstances that were revealed during the trial.
Another solution to the problem may be to freeze her current and future income. In this case, the actress will have to transfer part of her salary to her ex-husband until the entire amount of the debt is repaid. And although there is nothing unusual in the decision itself, the payment of $ 10 million can take many years.
Another likely result that experts are talking about is Heard's bankruptcy application to write off debts.
But everything is not simple here either. US law provides that debt incurred as a result of "intentional and malicious harm" is allocated in bankruptcy cases in a separate line. Johnny Depp may demand to recognize defamation by Heard as a similar case. In addition, a fine of $ 350 thousand will need to be paid in any case.
