THE AUTHORITIES OF OREGON ARE SUING THE WHITE HOUSE

After the high-profile murder case of an African-American George Floyd at the end of May this year, the protests followed by the mass riots began in the United States. People took to the streets and expressed their disagreement, denoting the injustice that had occurred.

The most significant protest took place in Seattle, but the security forces managed to stop it, which cannot be said about the situation in Portland, where the discontent followed by the riots and destruction of property have continued for two months already.

As a result, the federal authorities had to intervene in the situation and restore order in the region on their own. Since the beginning of July, federal officers have been detaining the most active protesters - the operations have been carried out by them forcibly, without giving any explanations (in vehicles without markings). In addition, tear gas and pepper spray were used by law enforcement officers in the crowds of demonstrators.

According to the federal authorities, such measures have been brought in to restore order in the city - the state authorities demand to stop the arrests in order to provide people with an opportunity to speak out.

The result of the confrontation between the two levels of government was a lawsuit filed by the state attorney general against the Federal Government, in which he demanded a ban on the arrests of protesters. According to him, such methods are not necessary and do not correspond to the policy of the state, in addition, they cause greater instability in the situation with the protesters.
