WEINSTEIN WILL PAY $ 17 MILLION TO VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ABUSE

Delaware Judge Mary Walroth, who was considering the bankruptcy of the company of American producer Harvey Weinstein, approved $ 17.1 million payout to women who suffered from sexual violence. How much each of the victims will receive is still unknown.

According to the court's decision, a special fund will be formed to deal with the distribution of funds between fifty women.

We should recall that the scandal with the sexual harassment of a Hollywood producer in relation to a huge number of women broke out in 2017 after publication in The New York Times.

Accused by more than a hundred women, Weinstein was fired from the Weinstein Company, which he co-founded with his brother Robert.

A few months later, in February 2018, the company filed for bankruptcy. At that moment, the process against the producer was only gaining momentum. Famous film actresses, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Uma Thurman, have publicly shared their stories of Weinstein's behavior.

By March 2020, the trial ended in a conviction. Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in New York State, avoiding a life sentence. Oral sex, which the producer coerced his assistant Miriam Haley into in 2006, cost him 20 years in prison. He received another three years for raping Jessica Mann in one of the premises of a hotel in Manhattan in March 2013. The two cases of rape in which the defendant was charged have not been proven. And on May 29, the producer, who had already been in prison, was overtaken by four more charges of violence, including the rape of a minor.

The current decision on compensation for moral damage has been agreed with the victims, some of whom will receive more than $ 500,000.

Eight women spoke out against the decision, and 39 approved it. According to the judge, if such a decision was not made, then the victims of violence could count on only minimal amounts or even be left with payout.

It is also known that $ 9.7 million will be received by the former employees and management of the bankrupt company, who have had to pay for legal services out of their own pockets over the past few years. The court exempted co-owner Robert Weinstein and several other executives of the company from any potential liability arising from Harvey Weinstein's misconduct.

The reports about serious health condition of the cinematographer have recently been appearing in American media.

Some time ago, a 68-year-old producer, a former board member of Miramax Films, was examined on suspicion of being infected with COVID-19, but the test turned out to be negative. It is known that during the period of imprisonment, Weinstein's numerous diseases worsened, and a tracking system was installed to prevent possible suicide attempts.
