THE FAMILY OF THE OLYMPIC CHAMPION FROM CHINA REFUSED THE PRIZE OF 3 BILLION RUBLES
14-year-old Quan Hongchan won gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in diving from a 10-meter platform. In China, her family was offered a large cash prize and numerous gifts, but they rejected all the offers.
After her triumph at the Olympics, Quan stated that she did it all for money - her mother needed help since she had been seriously injured in accident four years before. As a result, the athlete's family was offered 30 million pounds (more than 3 billion rubles) and real estate, and the Zhangqiang hospital offered to provide her mother and sick grandfather with a full range of medical services.
However, the athlete's father said that they would not accept any presents or help.
Quan's father is a farmer who grows oranges. He noted that their family ‘would not take a penny’.
In addition to money and real estate, the Chinese company offered Quan an unlimited supply of her favorite food - latio spicy wheat sticks. She was also offered life tickets to the zoo, amusement parks and many other gifts. But nothing of these was accepted.
Quan's father urged fans of the athlete not to
come to their village, because due to the crowds, the village is paralyzed. The
girl is originally from Guangdong province in the south of China.
