SOUTH KOREA MAY CONSIDER THE ISSUE OF WOMEN'S CONSCRIPTION INTO THE ARMED FORCES
SOUTH KOREA MAY CONSIDER THE ISSUE OF WOMEN'S CONSCRIPTION INTO THE ARMED FORCES
According to a representative of the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Korea, the principles of manning the armed forces may change in the country. Currently, there is a rule on the compulsory conscription of men, but this requirement may undergo changes.
The reason for possible adjustments could have been an online petition, which has already collected about 100,000 votes. The citizens who supported the initiative spoke in favor of the obligation of women to serve in the army by conscription.
Now there is no such requirement, however, the women are still allowed to serve if desired.
Any changes, including contract service or conscription of women, should be made on the basis of comprehensive analysis and upon reaching public consensus, according to an official from the country's Ministry of Defense. The official of the department also stressed out that the situation with voting in the framework of the petition requires a reaction from the leadership of the South Korea.
It should be noted that the country has been having problems with conscription for several years. This is due to the processes of population decline and aging of society.
