ITALIAN AUTHORITIES SELL HOUSES FOR ˆ1

The administration of the small Italian town of Taranto in the south of the country intends to sell seven houses in the historical part of the city for a symbolic price of ˆ 1.

This information appeared on the official website of representatives of the local authorities. The terms of the deal imply the seller's obligation to restore the abandoned building in compliance with environmental and energy saving requirements. The intentions of the authorities are aimed at the further development of the city and are coupled with a desire to breathe a new life into it.

The history of Taranto began in the ninth century BC and was associated with Ancient Greece, as evidenced by the local dialect, which still has the echoes of the Greek language.

For the moment, several investors, including the foreign ones, have shown their interest in the offer.

It should be noted that the initiative of the mayor to sell the abandoned houses is not new. The authorities of other small towns in Italy attract attention to their territories by means of such actions. Some settlements can be saved and even made centers of tourism, others, including medieval ones, remain abandoned by their inhabitants and consigned to oblivion.
