President of Colombia Ivan Duque announced the abolition of fees for higher education - Colombians from the low-income families will be able to take advantage of the privilege. Duque posted this statement on his Twitter.
Residents of the country from the first, second and third strata will be able to count on free higher education - these categories are considered poor in Colombia. The innovation will take effect from the second semester of this year and will be implemented in technical schools and universities.
Mass protests have been taking place in Colombia since April 28.
The residents of the country are not satisfied with the new taxation system, since they will have to pay more taxes. 42 people were killed in the clashes and over a thousand Colombians were injured.
Activists discussed the possibility of changing the reform with President Duque, but no consensus was reached - new protests began on May 12.
