The Finnish parliament has passed a law on the construction of stronger fences on the border with Russia in connection with the country's desire to join NATO.
Recall that Finland, after decades of military non-alignment, applied for membership in the NATO military alliance in May. The process of official entry started this week.
Fearing that Moscow may use migrants to exert political pressure, new amendments to the law on border protection contribute to the construction of stronger barriers on the 1,300-kilometer eastern border with Russia.
As explained in the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Finland, the purpose of the law is "to improve the operational capabilities of the border service in responding to hybrid threats."
The new law also allows border crossings to be closed and asylum seekers to be concentrated at certain points in the event of a large-scale attempt to cross the border.
Helsinki also adopted amendments to the Emergency Powers Act to better account for the definition of an "emergency" to various hybrid threats.
