Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications started blocking the media
On March 4, the State Duma adopted a law criminalizing false reports about the operations of the Armed Forces of Russia. It was decided to make a corresponding amendment to the Criminal Code, supplementing it with Article 207.3. At the same time, since February 24 (the beginning of a special operation on the territory of Ukraine), the resources of a number of Russian and foreign media have become inaccessible due to their blocking by the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications.
Internet users had problems accessing the websites of Meduza media outlet (recognized as a foreign agent), the Russian service of the BBC, and Deutsche Welle the day before. Later, representatives of the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications told journalists that these websites, as well as a number of others (Radio of Liberty, recognized as a foreign agent of the ‘Voice of America’), had indeed been blocked. As a reason, the department referred to the facts of unreliable information distributed by these media outlets.
Prior to this, the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications blocked the ‘Echo of Moscow’ radio station, the Rain TV channel (recognized as a foreign agent) and the website of The Village.
After that, the representatives of The Village released information that they would close the office in Russia, and the editorial office itself would continue its activities in the capital of Poland.
The leadership of Gazprom Media, which included the ‘Echo of Moscow’, held an emergency meeting. It was decided to close the radio station, as well as the website. At the same time, the ‘Echo of Moscow’ channel has continued to work on YouTube.
Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matveyenko said that Western countries had unleashed an information war against the Russian Federation, which requires harsh laws and tough response measures to resist. In her opinion, the flows of lies were brought down on Russian citizens through social networks controlled by the United States.
We should remind our readers that Twitter was ‘slowed down’ back in March 2021, and restrictions on Facebook and Instagram were imposed on February 24, since the accounts of the ‘Zvezda’ TV channel, RIA Novosti news agency, Lenta.ru and Gazeta.ru were blocked by the network.
The Taiga.info website was also previously blocked.
The reason was the ‘wrong’ coverage of events in Ukraine. The student magazine Doxa was subjected to a similar blockade. The decision to suspend work in the Russian Federation was made by the Znak.com online media. The Rain TV channel (recognized as a foreign agent) announced the termination of its activities. Novaya Gazeta published information that it would remove information about Ukraine from its website and social networks in order not to be charged under the new criminal law.
