CORONAVIRUS IS PROPOSED TO BE TREATED WITH RADIATION
CORONAVIRUS IS PROPOSED TO BE TREATED WITH RADIATION
Several groups of the scientists have put forward the idea of treating COVID-19 with radiation therapy.
The scientists from the Department of Medical Physics of the Jack Ady Cancer Center in Canada, having studied the scientific researches, announced the possibility of reducing the percentage of deaths from pneumonia using small doses of X-rays. Laboratory tests on animals have shown that the acute phase of pneumonia can be cut in half.
A new method has already been applied to ten patients with coronavirus in the United States.
The patients who took the experimental method of treatment got rid of the infection in 3 days. For comparison, the patients in the control group recovered within 12 days. The time spent in the hospital has decreased markedly.
However, there are also disadvantages of such a treatment. As it was stated by the American radiologists, there were side effects. The researchers agree that the low-dose radiation therapy can actually reduce inflammation, but it also kills the immune B and T cells that humans need to fight the infection.
Scientists from Russia noted that this method could be used in the treatment of people only after long-term and careful animal testing.
When it comes to the COVID-19 cases, the recovery process in the lung tissues is altered, and the radiation therapy, in turn, can aggravate it. It is noted that for the moment, the origin and characteristics of the coronavirus are poorly understood, which is why it is unreasonable to risk the people's lives and health.
