AMERICAN POLICE WILL FACE THE REFORMS BECAUSE OF THE MURDER OF GEORGE FLOYD
AMERICAN POLICE WILL FACE THE REFORMS BECAUSE OF THE MURDER OF GEORGE FLOYD
A wave of protests that has swept across the United States because of the murder of African American George Floyd puts the police at the risk of reform. The city council in Minneapolis has already promised protesters to abolish the police department and create a new model of the public security service that will be under control of the local community.
At the same time, the experts note a decline in the wave of violence that has swept the states in the previous days. The changing nature of the demonstrations this weekend proves that the demand for large-scale police reform has been in tune with broad segments of the American society.
The Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, has also announced a series of reforms that should restore confidence between the residents and the police departments.
He promised that he would take on the function of the law enforcement on the street, taking it from the police, accused of using these function to prosecute the minorities. In particular, we are talking about the appropriations that can be redistributed from the police budget in favor of the social services, working in “color” communities.
The experts note that a change in the tone of political speeches is a clear sign of the increasing popularity of a social movement that advocates under the slogan “Do not finance the police!” Having been established long before the events in Minneapolis, it came to the center of public attention now.
In Los Angeles alone, 51% of the city’s budget goes to the police.
Although the reform of the police is long overdue, the question of the degree of its radicalism remains a subject of debates between politicians and the activists of the movements organizing the protests both.
The Republican party Senator and the former rival of Donald Trump, Mitt Romney took part in a joint march with evangelical Christians in Washington on Sunday. Talking to reporters, he said that he wanted to put an end to violence and cruelty, making sure that the life of African-Americans matters. That is how the slogan “Black Lives Matter” was caught up by the political party of the Republicans, where the ideas of reliance on the "law and order" were more popular.
At the same time, the representatives of the democratic parties decided to adopt a draft law that allows changing of the status of a policeman in the United States and pass it through the House of Representatives. According to the voluminous document, a police representative will be easier to bring to account for the abuse of authority and excessive use of violence.
If the bill is passed, this will allow the police to demand compensation for damage.
On the part of the initiators of the reform, it is proposed to create a kind of “board of shame”, where the names of the policemen who commit arbitrariness would be placed. However, the experts believe that the draft law is unlikely to be adopted in its current form. While for the radicals (against the background of slogans about the abolition of the police institute) the document looks too soft, the conservative Republicans, led by Trump, do not plan to change anything at all, trying to maintain the status quo.
