On August 9, at a meeting with journalists, the head of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced that he would resign soon. However, no specific dates have been set.
Lukashenko only noted that this will happen ‘very soon’. The current head of Belarus did not name a potential successor, stressing out that the people of the country would decide this.
‘Belarusian people choose will choose the president,’ said Lukashenko.
At the same time, the head of Belarus said that there are 15-20 people who are able to adequately lead the country - they all showed themselves off during the period of unrest in 2020. The president also stressed out that each of them ‘is somewhat similar to him’. The new candidates will not be from the opposition. The opposition, according to Lukashenko, has no prospects.
The head of the country also spoke about the elections held in the country in August 2020. Let us remind our readers that they provoked a wave of rallies, protests and actions of the opposition. Lukashenko believes that the elections were held in conditions of total transparency and can be called democratic.
The President of Belarus also believes that many candidates did not initially plan to fight honestly and fairly, but only prepared to ‘hammer the power’.
For the moment, Lukashenko has not decided, what exactly to do in retirement.
After the elections in 2020, protests had not subsided in Belarus for six months, and the security forces detained tens of thousands of residents. At least four people died, hundreds of people went to prisons for opposition activities. The press received numerous reports of attacks and torture of protesters.
