THE USA REQUEST TO DECLINE TO LIFT THE SANCTIONS FOR OLEG DERIPASKA

Oleg Deripaska's lawsuit against the US Treasury is currently under consideration of a federal court of the metropolitan area of Columbia

The core of demands of the billionaire is to lift the sanctions that were imposed on him and a number of his companies in April 2018. The restrictions were implemented by the prohibition on entry into the United States, the freezing of all the assets, as well as by the impossibility for the American citizens to conduct business partnerships. The damage from the restrictions cost the billionaire 80% of his fortune; at the moment, Forbes estimates it as $ 2.3 billion.

We should recall that later, some of the sanctions on the companies was lifted, which cost Deripaska shares in corporations, but the restrictions on him personally remained in force.

Demanding in court to declassify the contents of the evidence memorandum, as well as to lift the sanctions, the businessman partially achieved his goal: last Friday, the defense side submitted the text of the evidence memorandum to the court, which contains the justifications for refusing to lift the sanctions. However, the Ministry of Finance itself refused to lift the sanctions, suggesting that instead of it, the court should terminate consideration of the billionaire’s claim or make a decision in a simplified manner.

According to the Ministry of Justice of the US, the decision to impose sanctions on Deripaska “was not arbitrary and random”. What is more, the ministry also refutes the billionaire’s claim on the violation of his rights in the form of lack of awareness in the trial.
