THE US IS SUING JOHN BOLTON BECAUSE OF HIS MEMOIRS

The federal court of the Metropolitan District of Columbia has received a lawsuit from the US Department of Justice against former National Security Assistant of the President John Bolton. It is known that the reason lies in the defendant's memoirs about working in the White House which are about to be published.

The authorities accuse Bolton of violating the obligations that he assumed by taking a public post. In other words, he has revealed secret information. The US Department of Justice demands a prohibition on the publication of the memoirs – the 500-page book might allegedly reveal a lot of facts, related to state secrets to the readers.

It was also noted in the lawsuit that under the agreement, Bolton’s memoirs had to undergo a special check in the White House before publication, but the author refused to do it. The Ministry of Justice stated that Bolton decided to terminate the check unilaterally and independently decided to release the secret information.

American human rights activists have already spoken out about the current situation, noting that the court will most likely side with Bolton.

There were precedents in the US history - 50 years ago, the Nixon administration tried to ban the release of the Pentagon Dossier, but the court found the statement a violation of rights of the American citizens. A little later, a Pentagon employee, Daniel Ellsberg, disappointed with the war in Vietnam, handed important secret documents over to the newspaper. The court, again, ruled that this action was legal and the American media have a right to publish this information.

President Donald Trump has spoken out about the current situation, noting that he hopes to bring Bolton to the criminal liability. Scandalous memoirs were to be released in May, now their publication has been postponed until the end of June. According to the insiders, the book could cause serious damage to Trump, as the author accuses the president of weakening the United States. It is necessary to recall that John Bolton has been dismissed from his post in September 2019.
