Russian users of Netflix filed a class action lawsuit for 60 million rubles
The district court of Khamovniki accepted a class action lawsuit from Russian users of Netflix who complained that the streaming service violated consumer protection laws.  The plaintiffs, whose interests are represented by the “Chernyshev, Lukoyanov and Partners” law office, demand to pay 60 million rubles in compensation.

According to the applicants, the sudden withdrawal of Netflix from Russia violates the company's obligations to users and the terms of the concluded contracts. Previously concluded agreements, which have been carefully studied by lawyers, do not imply unilateral termination or refusal to fulfill the obligations.

The Netflix service intended to cease operations in Russia from the beginning of March. On March 3, the platform published information that it would freeze all project activities on the territory of the Russian Federation, motivating its decision by the actions of Russians on the territory of Ukraine.

Artur Airapetov, representing the Moscow Chamber of Advocates, suggested on March 17 that class action lawsuits based on civil law norms could become a reaction to the Netflix's decision. Rules of law do not imply unilateral refusals to fulfill the terms of the transaction, if such are not fixed in the contract.

Russian courts, according to the expert, are likely to be on the side of consumers, given the specifics of Russian legislation.

On March 23, it became known that Netflix made it inaccessible for Russians to use its application on mobile platforms. Users who tried to enter the name of the streaming service in the search did not receive a positive response.

Now the representatives of a legal bureau are waiting for other participants in the relationship, whose interests were violated by the actions of the American company, to join the class action lawsuit. So far, 20 people are involved in the lawsuit, but it is still not too late for those who wish to turn to lawyers and join the lawsuit that has already been filed, lawyers say.
