Russian Film Group is driven to bankruptcy by private investor
On January 10, 2022, the Moscow Arbitration Court received a claim from an individual entrepreneur, Evgeny Grischuk.  He demanded that the Russian Film Group (RFG Corp) be declared bankrupt.  The owner of the company, Alexei Petrukhin, has already stated that he plans to pay off the debt to the plaintiff.

Judge Sergei Istomin, who considered the claim, decided to leave it without movement until February 25.  The claim did not contain a document confirming the payment of fee and the evidence of the plaintiff's intentions published at Fedresurs.

Evgeny Grischuk is known to be an investor of the film company.  He became an investor after he had acquired the right to demand payment of a debt from ‘Argunov Studio’.
The company was engaged in the creation of visual effects for the film ‘Secrets of the dragon’s seal. A journey to China.’
The contract was concluded in June 2016, but has not been fully paid.  In 2020, ‘Argunov Studio’ managed to win a claim for the recovery of 3.725 million rubles of principal and almost 1 million as a penalty (case ¹ A40-40504 / 20-5-298).

The film itself, as noted by the media, failed at the box office.  It was planned that a trilogy would be filmed.  Box office receipts for the first part (‘Viy 3D’) in Russia brought about 1.2 billion rubles.  In 2014, the film was the highest-grossing Russian premiere.

It was decided to spend 2.3 billion rubles on the second part (sequel).  The film was shot by RFG together with the China Film Group.  However, despite the huge amount of investments, it was not possible to recoup the money spent.  Even the participation of foreign celebrities, such as Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger, did not help.  In Russia, box office sales amounted to about 333.6 million rubles, and abroad - just over $14 million.
In 2017, the debts accumulated during filming led to the bankruptcy of the RFG company and its owner Alexei Petrukhin.
In March, the bankruptcy proceedings were terminated.  However, back in 2015, the RFG company entered into a contract with RFG Corp LLC on the transfer of rights to films in advance.

One of the unpleasant sides in the bankruptcy case then was the challenging of the RFG’s transaction with the Cypriot company Trevano Pictures, which received the rights to distribute the first film in Ukraine.  The fees amounted to 180 million rubles, which the bankruptcy trustee demanded to return.

The litigation dragged on for a very long time.  On January 10, 2022, the decision of the Supreme Court of Russia (¹ 305-ES19-12763) was issued.  The court refused to transfer the complaint against the decision of the previous instances to the Judicial Board for Economic Disputes.
