The financial and operational problems of Intermoda, a major Russian distributor of European clothing, have reached a critical stage. On May 19, a statement from the Federal Tax Service No. 29 in Moscow declaring the company bankrupt appeared in the court file. Previously, similar measures were considered by private creditors, including Alfa-Bank and Fordevind MFO.

Intermoda has long been an official supplier of the well-known Bugatti, OUI and Casa Moda brands. However, by the end of 2024, its activities were effectively stopped. Due to a sharp drop in revenue and accumulated debts, the company was forced to sell off the remaining products and stop paying salaries, completely disbanding the staff.

Alfa-Bank, whose claims exceeded 36 million rubles, was among the private creditors who announced their intention to seek bankruptcy. IFC Fordevind also intends to file a lawsuit, which insists on declaring bankrupt not only the legal entity, but also its CEO and founder– Maxim Demchuk.

The company's financial statements for 2024 indicate a significant deterioration in performance: revenue decreased by almost half, from 3.4 billion rubles to 1.8 billion. At the same time, instead of a profit of 64.6 million in 2023, the company recorded a loss of 51.7 million. One of the reasons for the losses in Intermode is the large-scale theft of a batch of goods in Europe intended for the Russian market. In this episode, the company is trying to recover over 500,000 euros from Ingosstrakh.

However, the loss of goods is only one of the factors of the crisis. Sanctions have had a significant impact on business, making financial settlements with foreign partners more difficult, as well as increased logistical costs. The situation was also aggravated by the massive withdrawal of foreign brands from the Russian market. This has limited the range, supply, and sustainability of the distribution as a whole.

Taking into account the official termination of operations in the fall of 2024, the future fate of Intermoda will be determined by a court decision. Against the background of the general pressure on the clothing market under the sanctions regime and structural changes in international trade, this case reflects a tendency for even stable participants to be washed out of the branded retail segment.

Intermoda's history highlights the vulnerability of the distribution business in an unstable external economic environment and increasing pressure from regulators and creditors. The probability of bankruptcy of the company is high. If the court accepts the claim, this case will be another confirmation of the crisis in the clothing import market in Russia.
