A CLAIM TO CZECH REPUBLIC: GRANDCHILDREN OF THE FORMER OWNER OF THE RUSSIAN EMBASSY BUILDING DEMANDED COMPENSATION
A plot of land with the mansion was seized by the state by decree of the President of Czechoslovakia back in 1945, reports the List local edition. According to the text of the same decree, the owners were entitled to compensation. They have been trying to obtain it since 2008.

The Czech media reported on the fact of filing a new lawsuit on April 26. The previous one was filed back in 2008 by the daughter of the former owner, Prague banker Georg Popper Lisabeth, and contained claims in the amount of 1 billion kroons (about 480 thousand dollars). Last year - 12 years later - the court nevertheless decided to deny its satisfaction on the basis of non-payment by the initiators of the court fee in the amount of 4 million kroons.

Today, the grandchildren of the former owner are trying to obtain compensation. The building had belonged to Popper since 1927, but in 1938 he emigrated, fearing the consequences of the spread of Nazism. Since then, his family had not returned to their homeland, and in 1968 the embassy of the USSR was located in a building in the Bubenech quarter. The Embassy of Russia is now also located there.

Earlier, on April 19, the head of the Prague-7 municipality Jan Chizhinsky announced a demand sent to the Russian embassy to release half a hectare of the occupied land. "The Prague City Council has called on the Czech government to negotiate to bring the area occupied by the Russian embassy in line with the state that preceded the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops in August 1968 into Czechoslovakia," tweeted Chizhinsky.

The decision was made against the background of aggravation of relations between Russia and the Czech Republic after the expulsion of 18 Russian diplomats from the republic, reports TASS. The reason was the accusation put forward by the Czech side about the alleged involvement of Russia in the incident at the ammunition depot in Vrbetica in 2014.
