THE ECONOMIST WARNED ABOUT THE BANKRUPTCY OF SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS
A well-known economist and author of the theory of rare catastrophic events warns market participants about the high probability of a serious collapse. According to Nassim Taleb, the current growth of stock indexes is based on a very shaky foundation – the successes of a small group of companies developing artificial intelligence. This situation creates the risk of an avalanche-like drop in quotations if the balance of power in this narrow segment changes.

In an interview with Bloomberg, the expert emphasized that bidders traditionally ignore the possibility of unlikely but destructive scenarios. He predicts not just a temporary correction, but a full-scale recession. The reason lies in an overly optimistic assessment of the sustainability of today's leaders of the technological race.

Speaking at an investment forum organized by the Universa Investments Foundation, Taleb admitted that many software developers may not survive the increased competition and tectonic shifts in global politics and economics. The main profits from the AI boom will not go to those who are currently at the peak of popularity.

The economist draws attention to the dangerous concentration of market power. In recent years, index growth has been provided by an extremely narrow group of technology giants. The higher the dependence on multiple issuers, the greater the vulnerability of the entire system. A change of favorites or disappointment in their prospects will instantly devalue the assets of millions of investors. Taleb advises using safety tools in advance, as the strongest blows to the market are always delivered suddenly.

Among the additional destabilizing factors, the analyst highlights not only the excitement around AI, but also fundamental macroeconomic problems. He points to the record increase in the value of gold, the frightening size of the budget deficit of the United States, and the growing risks associated with using the dollar as an instrument of sanctions pressure. Undermining confidence in the US currency reduces the attractiveness of dollar assets.

Commenting on the prospects of trade policy, the speaker noted that businesses are able to adapt to any stable rules, including high duties. But it is precisely the unpredictability of decisions that paralyzes business activity. A separate challenge is the threat of disruptions in oil supplies due to tensions between Washington and Tehran.

A new energy collapse, similar to the crisis of the seventies, can trigger stagflation. According to Taleb, no monetary authority can cope with this phenomenon, even if the Federal Reserve System were headed by a genius of Albert Einstein's level.

Nassim Taleb, a well-known publicist and ex–trader, became famous for his concept of "Black Swans" - unpredictable events that overturn the established order. It is noteworthy that long before the coronavirus pandemic, he referred to possible epidemics as such threats, calling for these risks to be taken into account in strategies.
