Alex Jones, who owns the InfoWars website, filed for bankruptcy in the US court. The main reason was the court's verdict on the need to pay about $1.5 billion due to the spread of false information about the mass shooting in Sandy Hook in 2012.

Jones appealed to the Houston bankruptcy court, filing an application for protection from creditors (under Chapter 11 of the US Code). Until now, the exact amount of the entrepreneur's personal savings remained unknown. In the lawsuit itself, Jones indicated that he has assets in the amount of $ 1 million to $10 million, as well as liabilities in a similar amount.

In April 2022, Rusbankrot already talked about how InfoWars filed for bankruptcy. In July, Free Speech Systems, another company that actively participated in the work of the Infowars website, filed a similar lawsuit.

For many years, Jones has claimed that the 2012 murder of 20 schoolchildren and 6 elementary school employees in Sandy Hook (Newtown, Connecticut) was the result of a staging, the purpose of which was the government's desire to deprive US citizens of the right to own weapons. He later admitted that the tragedy really took place and was not a staged game, but the plaintiffs in court managed to prove that Jones had been profiting for many years by spreading lies about the massacre within the walls of the school.

In October 2022, a Connecticut court ruled that Jones himself and the parent company of Free Speech Systems are obliged to compensate the moral damage to the families of the victims of 2012. They were ordered to pay $1 billion. Later, this amount was supplemented with a demand for another $ 473 million.

According to lawyer Chris Mattei, representing the plaintiffs, bankruptcy is unlikely to help Jones escape responsibility. His words are quoted by Reuters. And although bankruptcy could be used to pay off debts, but not in this case. According to American experts, such a scheme is not applicable in cases of "intentional or malicious harm" caused by the debtor. The libel Jones was convicted of is just such a case.

Alex Jones' lawyers said that their client will appeal against the verdicts of the courts of Texas and Connecticut, adopted earlier. Judge Barbara Bellis also banned the entrepreneur from withdrawing any personal assets from the United States. This was petitioned by plaintiffs who suspect Jones of trying to hide his assets in order to avoid liability.

At the same time, Jones' current appeal to the court carries additional risks to him. He will be forced to disclose his assets in court, since concealing assets in bankruptcy cases is a federal crime under US law. Now, as the American lawyer Sidney Sheinberg noted, Jones' assets will become an "open book".
