A FORECAST OF OMBUDSMAN: 77% OF COMPANIES WILL NOT WITHSTAND THE SECOND WAVE OF THE PANDEMIC

Russian Business Ombudsman Boris Titov has once again expressed concern about possible restrictions and their detrimental impact on the country's economy. Referring to the data of an earlier sociological survey, the Ombudsman said that the majority of the operating enterprises would not survive the second wave of the pandemic. This will happen if the authorities allow themselves to repeat the measures that were introduced in the spring of 2020.

The data available to Titov indicate a reduction in revenue for 60% of Russian companies.

Many large companies in 18 regions of Russia still have not resumed their activities after they were closed. Despite the fact that the restrictions imposed by the state were of a temporary nature and were designed for several months, the work of enterprises has not been resumed after half a year.

The Business Ombudsman insists that the measures to support entrepreneurship should be extended. Otherwise, the state may face a wave of bankruptcies of the companies. What is more, according to Titov, it is necessary to directly subsidize small businesses until the spring of 2021, so as not to completely crush their economic activity.

The idea that there will be no new bans on business activities in the event of another outbreak of coronavirus infection has been previously voiced by Titov in August this year. Then he called the introduction of such prohibitions unlikely, estimating the possibility of such a development of events at 10%.

According to Titov, the fight against epidemics is possible without the introduction of such restrictive measures, as the experience of the Soviet past suggests.

Alexei Kudrin, who said earlier that the poverty level in the country exceeded 20 million people, agrees with the opinion of Boris Titov. According to the head of the Accounts Chamber, funds for further support of the population and business are available and should be used in the event of a new wave of the spread of the disease.
