A temporary commission on information policy created under the Federation Council came up with an initiative to introduce a number of penalties for social networks. Among them, there are fines and blocking of platforms - both for a certain period and permanently.
This was stated by the chairman of the commission Alexey Pushkov. According to the senator, such measures may be necessary in a situation where slogans for participation in uncoordinated rallies or protests similar to those held the day before in support of the politician Alexei Navalny are posted on social networks.
According to the conclusion of the commission, during January of this year, Internet platforms did not take enough measures to identify and stop the dissemination of information that both inclines to participate in unauthorized rallies and presents these actions in a positive way.
Internet resources were directly or indirectly used for the purposes of illegal actions, said Pushkov.
Despite the demands of the prosecutor's office and the Federal Service for Supervision in the Sphere of Telecom, Information Technologies and Mass Communications to remove inappropriate content, this was not done in full.
The members of the commission agreed on the need to improve the current legislation to prevent the mobilization of citizens and their participation in illegal activities.
