RESIDENTS OF ALASKA WERE PROPOSED TO BE CONSIDERED RUSSIANS

Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev made a peculiar statement - he proposed to call the inhabitants of Alaska "citizens of the Russian Empire." The reason was the information found on the website of the US State Department.

Trutnev made such a statement after the statement of the United States saying that the inhabitants of the South Kuriles are Japanese nationals. The fact is that the Japanese newspaper Hokkaido Shimbun drew attention to the fact that when obtaining green cards, the Russians of this region are listed as Japanese.

Trutnev said that this is an entirely new position of international rules, and therefore it should be creatively developed and the status of Alaska residents should be reconsidered.

The Governor of the Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko also commented on the situation, recalling that all residents of the Kuriles consider themselves Russians. He cited the survey data, according to which almost 100% of Kuriles residents stated their position quite specifically.

We should recall that Japan claims its rights for several Kuril Islands, pointing to the 1855 Treatise. The Russian Federation, in turn, declares that the islands became part of the Soviet Union as a result of the war - they gained international recognition and are not subject to doubt. Due to the conflict over the Kuril Islands between the Russian and Japanese sides, a peace treaty on the results of World War II was never signed, since Japan makes the return of the islands a compulsory condition.
