According to Fedresurs website, the number of bankrupt citizens and individual entrepreneurs increased by 72.6% in 2020 compared to 2019. However, legal entities began to file for bankruptcy less often - their number decreased by 19.9%.

The number of bankrupt individuals (together with individual entrepreneurs) in 2020 is estimated at 119,049 people. In the overwhelming majority of cases (94.5%), the debtors themselves initiated the insolvency process. For comparison, in 2019, self-bankruptcy processes were launched in 90.7% of cases.

The FTSs began to report bankruptcies less often - their rate fell from 1.7% to 1% and from 7.5% to 4.6% for bankruptcy creditors.

We should recall that the bankruptcy of individuals has existed since 2015. In total, just over 282 thousand Russians managed to declare bankruptcy during this time. Experts note that recently their number has grown significantly due to the introduction of the possibility of extrajudicial bankruptcy.

As for the bankruptcies of legal entities, in 2020 there were 9,931 such cases, which is almost 20% less than last year. Monitoring procedures began to be introduced even less frequently - in 7,775 cases, which is 23.3% lower than in 2019.

Experts believe that such statistics on corporate bankruptcies is explained by the introduction of a moratorium, which was in effect until January 7, 2021. However, so far, after its removal, a flurry of bankruptcies has not been observed - the number of new applications is at the level of January 2020.

In legal entities, bankruptcy is initiated mainly by creditors.

In 2020, creditors filed applications for insolvency of debtors in 77.1% of cases, a year earlier this figure was 78.1%. The Federal Tax Service began to apply to court a little more often - 13% against last year's 12.6%. The debtors themselves also began to initiate bankruptcy more often - 9.3% against the previous 8.7%.

Most often, companies went bankrupt in Moscow (2012 cases), followed by Petersburg (729), Moscow region (706) and Sverdlovsk region (349).

Among the industries, trade (2583 bankruptcies), construction (2111), real estate (1183) and manufacturing related to processing (1090) became the leaders in insolvency.
