THE NUMBER OF BANKRUPT COMPANIES IN EUROPE IS GROWING
The European Statistics Agency reports a rise in the number of companies that have been declared bankrupt. In the first three months of 2021, their number increased by 5.8% compared to the previous quarter.

The most significant increase in the number of bankruptcies was shown by Romania - the number of companies declared insolvent increased by 72.1%. Poland and Spain have also shown high dynamics for bankrupt enterprises, in which the growth is 16.6% and 16.2%, respectively.

In some European countries, there has been a decrease in the number of insolvency petitions filed.

Such a negative trend was recorded by Eurostat staff in Latvia, Estonia and the Netherlands. The number of bankruptcy reports decreased by 42.2%, 23.7% and 20.1%.

European experts note that enterprises in almost all spheres of the economy have gone bankrupt in the current situation. The largest number of bankrupt companies was found in the transport, catering, hospitality, educational and socio-cultural sectors. In the construction and industrial sector, the number of companies filing for bankruptcy has not been significantly growing. In communications and telecommunications, there are even fewer bankruptcies.

Many Europeans, despite the difficult economic situation, are taking steps to open new companies. The total number of new business registrations in the first quarter of this year increased by 0.3%.

In some countries, statistics have recorded an increase in the number of registrations.

In particular, such dynamics was shown by Lithuania, Bulgaria and Italy, where in January-March 2021, there were 6-16% more applications for companies registration than in October-December 2020. At the same time, in Latvia, the number of business registrations, on the contrary, decreased by 7.9%. The largest decline, by almost a quarter (24.2%), was shown by Slovakia. It is followed by Portugal, where it was registered 14.9% less than before.

European entrepreneurs prefer to register new companies in the information, communications and transport sectors, show the data. There were significantly fewer people willing to start business in the field of education, medicine, HoReCa, cultural activities or trade.
