The spa town of Baden-Baden, which has become a popular holiday destination for wealthy Russians over the past two centuries, may be bankrupt. In recent months, the city has rapidly begun to lose Russians who have moved to other places.
As Die Welt notes, the loss of citizens from the Russian Federation may become a verdict for the welfare of the European resort. Along with the Russian oligarchs, who previously actively bought up fashion stores, the city is also leaving the clientele. This can lead to very severe consequences for the local economy.
Baden-Baden until recently had 1,150 residents with Russian passports. Almost the same number of persons had dual citizenship. However, according to the authors of the publication, the "most Russian" of the German cities was in a state of shock after the start of Russia's special operation in Ukraine.
Kurhaus, which is one of the most famous European resorts practicing recreational water treatments, has lost the Russian flag. The resort house that appeared in 1824, in which Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky once spent all his money, found himself in an unusual situation. At the same time, the flag of Ukraine decorated the city hall building.
According to Rene Loz, who heads the German-Russian cultural union, such a policy is unsatisfactory. After all, many Russians actively invested their savings in the development of the resort city when it was threatened with bankruptcy.
According to Nora Waggershausen, representing the tourism sector, the loss of Russians by the city can lead to losses not only for owners of expensive shops and hotels, but also negatively affect the work of museums and medicine.
The city, which was one of the best concert venues in Europe, stopped cooperating with Russian musicians after February 24. The concert venue refused to work with Valery Gergiev and canceled Anna Netrebko's performance.
