THE FOURTH SECTOR JOURNALISTS ASSOCIATION DECLARES LIQUIDATION
The Association of Journalists, which operated under the name of the ‘Fourth Sector’, made a decision to liquidate the organization, unwilling to wait for the status of a ‘foreign agent’. Anastasia Sechina, who managed the media project, announced this on the social network.

According to Sechina, checks in relation to the public organization have unexpectedly started. The members of the association received information about this from the Ministry of Justice on July 12. An unscheduled audit should not have begun on the initiative of the Ministry of Justice, the project manager notes, since it was enough to conduct a scheduled audit in November. Representatives of the ‘Fourth Sector’ were informed about this back in the spring.

The head of the association suggested that the law enforcement agencies decided to check the journalists, having suspected the media representatives of ‘political activities’.

Considering that the organization had foreign partners, the participants did not wait for the media group to be recognized as a ‘foreign agent’.

According to Sechina, the recent events can be called a ‘mad roller’, under which almost any journalist and freelancer can fall, since any activity can be recognized as political. The pressure on independent media outlets, which many experts associate with the upcoming elections, has been gaining momentum for several months in a row.

The representatives of the ‘Fourth Sector’ are not ready to live with the status of ‘foreign agents’ both psychologically and legally, said Sechina, especially when you consider the need for regular submission of reports, constant checks and reduced financial income. The ‘Fourth sector’ is being liquidated, and its participants again have a chance to become members of ‘informal community’.

The journalists have already announced that now the project will be closed, and its place will be taken by the ‘Artel’ informal community, in which the freelance correspondents will continue to work.

According to experts, 34 positions are currently occupied in the register of foreign agents. Moreover, 50% of the list was included in it in 2021. The authorities categorized Meduza, VTimes and The Insider as negatively labeled media. What is more, 13 journalists, who investigated scandalous stories from the life of the Russian political elite, received the status of foreign agents.
