According to the experts, a return to the level of demand for the air travel of 2019 can appear only in a few years: the pandemic has severely crippled the industry. The air carriers that have been on the verge of extinction for several months strive to optimize their costs with all their strength.
The subsidiaries of the Norvegian company have already declared the bankruptcy and a substantial reduction in staff; the Israeli airline El Al has faced serious financial difficulties, and the British airline Flybe, being the largest regional airline in Europe, was not able to bear the load and filed for bankruptcy as well.
The British Airways airline has also been recently included in this list. In the first quarter of this year alone, its revenue decreased by 13%, but the management is confident that the worst is yet to come.
Currently, more than 22,000 employees of British Airways are suspended from the jobs due to the falling demand for air travel and receive government compensation of 80% of their salary (but not more than $ 3,100).
The program involves 140 thousand enterprises - the British government pays the salaries to more than 1 million people.
However, in the case of British Airways, it was not enough - in this situation, the air carrier announced its intention to reduce the staff by one third, and 12,000 people will be laid off because of reduction. The decision was made on the basis of the forecast - since the restoration of passenger traffic is expected only in a few years, the company decided that they would not be able to maintain the full staff as it was before.
It is also worth noting that the trade union representatives have already announced their intention to withstand any layoffs in the airline.
